Live Lessons

Live Lessons

Live Lessons group exhibition at Azrieli Gallery (Jerusalem, 2021), co-curated with chief curator Tali Kayam, was based on my ongoing research of the meeting points between pedagogy and artistic creation. Which methods of learning stem from individual creative processes? How does learning affect and alter the creative act? These questions guided the curatorial thought behind this exhibition, and the selection of ‘hybrid’ works that view the artistic object as a tool – which learning is derived from and ultimately leads to.

Inspired by the fluid nature of the experience of learning, the exhibition constantly changed and evolved, affected by the presence and movement of people inside it. We invited artists and makers who host participatory workshops as part of their creative process.

Live Lessons presented lessons as works of art in lieu of static objects. Through an open, dynamic design, the gallery formed an open, dynamic study space – a creative academy where each and every visitor leaves their mark.

Azazel by Liav Mizrahi

Workshop participants tuft words into goat wool

Liav Mizrahi used felting as an educational and healing tool, sharing his practice with exhibit visitors. As the exhibit opened around Yom Kippur, Liav drew from ancient Jewish rituals of atonement through a scapegoat. Using goat wool, Liav offered participants to felted surfaces, mades of goat wool, to charge with the pains and offenses remaining in our hearts.

Street Talk by Ga Holistic
Michal Elzur & Nitzan Shalev

Studio Ga Holistic designs objects and furniture that utilizes local, sustainable materials, and supports the sharing of knowledge. In their workshop, Michal and Nitzan led the audience outside to the surrounding area of the gallery, where an improvised and immediate form of construction, characteristic of the region specifically and of Israel in general, can be easily captured. Inspired by these, they continued onto a lesson in improvisation as a design tool which is both stable and unraveled.
